主题:Complex network approach reveals global pattern of extreme-rainfall teleconnection

内容简介:We analyse climate dynamics from a complex network approach. This leads to an inverse problem: Is there a backbone-like structure underlying the climate system? For this we propose a method to reconstruct and analyze a complex network from data generated by a spatio-temporal dynamical system. This approach enables us to uncover relations to global circulation patterns in oceans and atmosphere.We reveal the global coupling pattern of extreme-rainfall events by applying complex-network methodology to high resolution satellite data and introducing a technique that corrects for multiple-comparison bias in functional networks. We show that extreme-rainfall events in the monsoon systems of south-central Asia, east Asia and Africa are significantly synchronized. Moreover, we uncover concise links between southcentral

Asia and the European and North American extratropics, as well as the Southern Hemisphere extratropics. Analysis of the atmospheric conditions that lead to these teleconnections confirmsRossby waves as the physical mechanism underlying these global teleconnection patterns and emphasizes their crucial role in dynamical tropical–extratropical couplings.

This concept is then applied to Monsoon data; in particular, we develop a general framework to predict extreme events by combining a non-linear synchronization technique with complex networks. This way we analyze the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) and identify two regions of high importance. By estimating an underlying critical point, this leads to a substantially improved prediction of the onset of the ISM.

报告人简介

Jürgen Kurths,现为美国物理学会与德国弗劳恩霍夫协会的院士,欧洲科学院院士。在德国罗斯托克大学学习数学并于1983年在GDR Academy of Sciences取得博士学位。1984-2008年为波茨坦大学理论物理/非线性动力学首席教授。2008年至今为柏林洪堡大学非线性动力学专业教授,同时也是波茨坦气候影响研究所跨学科概念与方法领域主管。2009年至今为阿伯丁大学国王学院的复杂系统和数学生物研究所复杂系统生物学第六任世纪主席。

同时Kurths教授获得多项学术奖励,其中包括:洪堡研究奖,欧洲地球科学联合会的理查森奖章。他还获得下诺夫哥罗德大学和萨拉托夫州立大学这两所大学的荣誉博士学位以及波茨坦大学荣誉教授称号。

Kurths教授在非线性动力学领域造诣深厚,主要研究领域包括复杂同步现象、复杂网络、时间序列分析以及它们在气候学、生理学、生物系统及工程、可持续发展研究这些领域的应用。迄今为止,他已经指导了来自20多个国家70多名博士生。他已经发表650余篇学术论文,出版了10部专著,其中有两部专著被引次数超过28000次。

Kurths教授是AIP journal CHAOS的主编和10多个期刊的编辑委员,包括Europhys. Lett., PLoS ONE, European Physics J., ST and Nonlinear Processes in Geophysics and of the Springer Series Complexity等。
